Grillz
Grillz had made a popular uprise during the 1980’s. Hip hop and rap artists like Flava Flav of Public Enemy and Big Daddy Kane popularised the jewellery as we know it. Grillz represented the cutting edge of hip-hop culture. Many people viewed grillz as a fresh and unique form of expression, and unlike other trends from this time (like Flava Flav’s clock necklace), grillz had become more than mere costume jewellery in some circles.
THE MOLDING PROCESS
To begin making grillz, you start by contacting us to purchase a mold kit and taking a dental impression of your top/bottom teeth depending on the choice of teeth. Typically you would have to go to a dentist to get this done, but with the rise of online retailers of grillz, more and more are able to ship the mold kits to your home so you can do the impressions and then send it back to them. Us included! Due to the grill being made based on the impression, this is the most important step, and accuracy is of upmost importance. If you’re from London and within the M25, you can choose to have a mobile service for a small fee of £25.00, or if you are from anywhere else in the world, we can post a mold kit out to yourself. Or if you prefer to see us at our showroom, in this case, the mold is FREE of charge; then please contact us for an appointment.
CREATING THE MOLDS OF YOUR TEETH
After the impressions are created, the next step is to pour dye stone to fill the impression and create the positive impression on which the grillz will be made from. The impression and tray are pressed against a vibrating machine whilst the dye stone is poured onto the mold. This ensures that there are no air bubbles on the mold and that the dye stone is distributed evenly into all corners of the impression.
CASTING THE MOLDS
This is the step where things get interesting and you get your first look at the custom grillz. The mold is then made into a casting with a wax lining through one of the multiple techniques that we use. We use thin wax sheets which are cut to the shape of the tooth, and build up in layers till we reach our desired thickness based on whether it is plain or going to have diamonds set on them. It is then put on what we refer to as a ‘wax tree’. This is then put into a metal encasing and hot metal is poured onto the wax allowing it to take the form of the wax. Once that process is complete, you have the beginnings of a custom grill.
